What are Abrasions?
An abrasion is just another medical term for a wound caused by anything from a simple graze to a severe scrape. Abrasions differ from other open wounds as they are typically caused by rubbing or sliding the skin against a hard and/or rough surface, like concrete or carpeting. Many of our patients who get abrasions usually get them on the elbows, knees, shins, ankles, or forearms. While abrasions are generally painful and uncomfortable, mild abrasions don't typically cause bleeding or long-term damage. If you are suffering from a more severe abrasion, we encourage you to Contact us and schedule your private consultation at your earliest convenience.
How Do I Know if I Have Abrasions?
Common symptoms of abrasions that many of our patients find they experience include:
- Damage to the upper-most layers of skin
- Burning, stinging, and tenderness in the affected area
- Mild bleeding where the skin has been scraped
What Causes Abrasions?
Abrasions are caused by a rubbing, scraping, or sliding of skin against a hard or rough surface. Mild cases of abrasions can include a slight scraping of a knee on the concrete or grazing of the hand against a countertop, while more severe cases can include road rash and carpet burn. Most abrasions we see are mild, meaning there is no extensive recovery involved. However, if a patient does have a third-degree or severe abrasion, special medical attention may be needed.
