What is Dermatitis?
Dermatitis may sound scary, but it's just a general term for irritated and inflamed skin. Because dermatitis is such a vague condition, many people with this condition may experience it differently. Your dermatitis may last a long time with seemingly no specific trigger or may flare up from time to time with a specific and recognized cause. We typically categorize dermatitis into four main types:
- Contact Dermatitis. This type of dermatitis occurs when your skin is exposed to a substance that triggers an allergic reaction or irritation. This can either manifest in rashes, burning, stinging, itching, or blistering.
- Atopic Dermatitis. Also known as eczema, atopic dermatitis is characterized by dry, scaly patches of skin and is most common in infants and children.
- Dyshidrotic Dermatitis. This type of dermatitis occurs when the skin is unable to protect itself, resulting in dry skin that itches and blisters easily.
- Seborrheic Dermatitis. This type of dermatitis, common in infants, results in dry, scaly patches of skin on the face and chest.
How Do I Know if I Have Dermatitis?
Common symptoms of dermatitis that many of our patients find they experience include:
- Dry and cracked skin
- Itching skin
- Stinging and burning
What Causes Dermatitis?
The cause of your dermatitis really depends on your body and what it is sensitive to. While patients who experience contact dermatitis may have external triggers like sensitivity to detergents and perfumes, patients who suffer from eczema may have a genetic predisposition. Most patients who struggle with flare-ups of dermatitis may find that they are triggered by their environment, have allergies, have a genetic predisposition in their family history, or suffer from other health conditions. If you're unsure of the cause of your dermatitis, our expert medical team members will be happy to give you a physical assessment and official diagnosis, followed by a personalized treatment plan for long-term relief.
